September School Holidays Program – History Alive @ Kryal Castle

“Jump back in time and witness the very best of historical entertainment, from Shakespeare to Birds of Prey Displays and an Ancient/ Roman Cavalry Demonstrations on the arena, and of course who could forget our Championship Joust!

All this and so much more in our jam packed “History Alive” Program running from September 18th – Dec 12th.”

Arena & Theatre Shows 

11:00am: Street Theatre- A (Mis) Adventure (Map Ref. 25)

Bringing 16th century clowning back for a giggle, meet Zanni, Columbina and the nasty Pantaloni, characters in a hilarious comedy of errors! Commedia Dell Arte was first performed in the mid 1500’s, and was the beginnings of pantomimes, clowning, improv, comedies, and even sitcoms! Just try not to laugh! Located beside the Playground (Map Ref. 25)

11:30am: Arena Show- Ancient Cavalry Display (Map Ref. 12)

Head to the main arena to see the weapons, armour and skills of cavalrymen from the ancient times. Before stirrups and saddles were even invented, these fearsome warriors dominated the battlefield of Europe and the Mediterranean. A real snapshot of historical warfare! (Map Ref. 12)

12:15pm: Street Theatre- Everyone Hates Shakespeare (Map Ref. 25)

Everyone hates Shakespeare, right? It’s outdated, boring and unrelatable. Lennox agrees with you! Even when Sampson brings a Lion on stage. And turns someone called Bottom into a donkey… and… wait, what?? And is that Lennox dressed as a lady? Are you sure this is Shakespeare?? beside the playground (Map Ref. 25).

1:00pm: Arena Show- Birds of Prey Display (Map Ref. 12)

The art of training birds of prey for hunting, known as falconry, was an elite sport in Medieval times. Martin Scuffins, founder of the Leigh Valley Hawk and Owl Sanctuary will lead you on a journey that spans 4000 years. Meet his magnificent birds of prey from the sanctuary and witness firsthand why these magnificent creatures have fascinated us for centuries. (Map Ref. 12)

1:30pm: Street Theatre- Apothecary 101 (Map Ref. 25)

Ever thought about changing your career but don’t know in what direction to turn? Fret not! In just 10 minutes YOU could be a fully-fledged Apothecary, with all the knowledge necessary to combat the very worst diseases! Well, at least as far as we know of in Medieval times. Find out more by our Medicinal Garden, beside the playground (Map Ref. 25).

2:15pm: Street Theatre- A Tale of No Consequence (Map Ref. 25)

3:00pm: Arena Show- Championship Joust (Map Ref. 12)

Return to the Tournament Arena for the ultimate display of knightly skills. See our knights wearing full steel armour and riding their amazing warhorses, charge and strike their opponents with their lances. A sight not to be missed! (Map Ref. 12)

Additional Activities & Attractions

Knight School (Map Ref. 12)

Children are invited to learn the skills of knighthood, under instruction from our Master at Arms with sword and shield. Max 5 participants per session, running from 10:15am until 3:00pm daily on the tournament arena (Map Ref. 12)

Note: This activity will pause during the performances on the Arena.

Pony Rides * $10pp (Map Ref. 13)

Does your little warrior have big dreams of being a brave defender of the realm, just like the Knights of Kryal Castle? Well, best get started with some training on your valiant steed! Test your skills with our adorable ponies. Running from 12:00pm-3:00pm, only $10, entry beside the castle stables (Map Ref. 13) Height restrictions apply.

Archery * From $5 (Map Ref. 19)

Learn the ancient art of archery in our indoor Archery Range! Try your hand with a real bow and arrow, who knows, Robin Hood may be recruiting soon! (Map Ref. 19)

Axe Throwing (Map Ref 12)

Why not put yourself to the test… the echoes of this ancient skill may already be running through your veins! Taking place from 10:15pm until 3:00pm every day on the Tournament Arena. Height restrictions apply. (Map Ref 12)

Potion Making Classes * $10pp (Map Ref. 22)

Our Alchemist has a few concoctions to create, and they need your help! For only $10, join their class and learn how to make your own bubbling brews. Bookings essential! Head to our Tintagel Room (Map Ref. 22), tickets can be purchased next door at the Tooth Fairy Lolly Shop (Map Ref. 23). Session times are 10:30am, 12:00pm and 1:30pm.

Wizard Workshop Displays (Map Ref.28)

Find the Wizard in their workroom and see them experiment with unusual magical ingredients to produce their famous potions. 10:30am, 11:00am, 12:00pm, 12:30pm, 1:00pm, 2:00pm, and 2:30pm Located on the second floor of the Wizard’s Tower. (Map Ref.28) Please be aware: due to the nature of the tower, space is limited and viewing can be restricted.

Ylva the Red (Map Ref. 14)

Ylva the Red is a historical reenactor and youtuber, focused on the creation of historical and historically-inspired clothing. Using traditional techniques, Ylva practices the art of cleaning fleece straight from the sheep’s back and weaving fabrics, to putting the trim on finished garments and everything in between! Running demonstrations of her work throughout the day, find her in the tabled section of the Ale House (Map Ref. 14)

Dragon’s Labyrinth (Map Ref. 2)

Make your way from the castle entrance, through the labyrinth where you will find the home of our most magical creatures. Tree Sprites, dragons and fairies await you! (Map Ref. 2)

Children under 10 may prefer a stroll through the She-Dragons egg garden
