Kryal Castle

For those interested in coming to the Baroque Horse Festival this weekend it's going to be a huge weekend. As well as all our normal castle activities we have a full schedule of horsey stuff happening.

Full schedule below

10:30 Horse Archery- Riders shoot at a target whilst riding at speed without the use of their reins in this exciting competition.

10:50 Lusitano Display- The Lusitano is a famed breed of horse known for its beauty, athleticism and spirit. See Lucio Do Rei from Noble Shadow Stud, work in hand and at liberty to showcase this exceptional example of the breed.

11:10 Garrocha Display- The Garrocha is a long pole that is still used by Iberian cowboys to manoeuvre cattle. It evolved from the lance and spear that have been used on horses for thousands of years. Four performers in Traditional Iberian dress and Medieval clothing perform the maneuvers of the Garrocha to music.

11:30 Grand Parade- Meet the horses and their riders of the Baroque Horse Festival, representing many different Baroque breeds and traditional costume.

12:00 Baroque Horsemanship Challenge- A competitive obstacle course combining historical weapons and Vaquero Horsemanship, that riders need to negotiate with skill and speed.

12:30 Longreining- The traditional skill of training horses from the ground. Today Amanda Massie with do a display of the art of longreining with her Part Bred Andalusian Mare Jindara Kalyipso.

12:50 Pas De Deux: The Pas De Deux, literally translated from French as “Step of Two” is a performance where two riders and horses perform classical dressage movements to music. Katherine Szalay Evans on her Lipizzaner Gelding Conversano Trieste and Ashleigh Ramsay-Klaassen on the Lipizzaner Stallion Conversano Grace, perform together wearing traditional Baroque Costume

1:10 Western Vaquero Display- The Vaquero are the traditional cowboys of the Iberian peninsula. Their methods were introduced to the americas and influenced the riding and cattle skills of the continent, particularly in the south. The riders in this display present the skills and traditional costumes of Western and Vaquero cowboys.

1:30 Friesian in Hand and Liberty Display- Yardan of Gramayre stud, shown in hand and at liberty to showcase the movement and beauty of the Friesian Horse.

2:00 Joust at Large- Jousting usually took place over a barrier to lessen the chance of horses colliding. At times, jousts would take place “at large”, that is is an open field without a tylt barrier. Paco and Valiant, being the exceptional horses they are, have the necessary skills to joust in this manner as you will see today.

2:30 Barrel Racing- Whist not a traditional Baroque sport, nothing stops these horses and riders having a bit of fun. Today we do things a little differently and run a race that is usually reserved for western style horses.

3:00 Pas de Deux- The Pas De Deux, literally translated from French as “Step of Two” is a performance where two riders and horses perform classical dressage movements to music. In this display Phillip Leitch riding the Friesian Stallion Noble Shadow Valiant and Sharryn Jenkinson riding her Australian Andalusian Mare Arapiles Isabella perform together wearing traditional Baroque Costume.

3:30 Last Ride of the Day- Meet the horses and riders of the Baroque Horse Festival as they have one last casual ride on the arena and give members of the public the chance to ask questions and have a pat.
